How do I know if my dog has a sensitive stomach?

Sensitive stomachs can be caused by a range of factors and can happen at any age. Some puppies are born with them, while some dogs can develop stomach issues over time.

Just as in people, an episode of flatulence (wind) or diarrhoea can be triggered in some dogs if their food doesn’t agree with them. This is known as having a ‘sensitive stomach’. Because your dog’s digestive system is crucial in making sure all the nutrients from their food can be absorbed and used, it is very important that they are fed sensitive dog food that can help support this, without making them ill.

True food allergies are relatively uncommon, food intolerances much more common. . Some of the more common dog food allergy symptoms include itching and sneezing, itchy paws, hot spots, skin rashes, scaly or oily skin, pigmented skin, and skin that has more of a leathery texture.

Other signs of dietary sensitivity with your dog may include chronic ear problems, vomiting, coughing, and wheezing. Food intolerances are much more common than true allergies with the usual symptom being runny poos.

What’s the difference between food allergies and food intolerance?

Food allergies and food intolerances are two different conditions which often have similar symptoms. While they are both examples of adverse food reactions, food allergies involve the animal’s immune system while food intolerances do not.

Food allergy or hypersensitivity – This occurs when a particular component of food (usually a protein) triggers the susceptible animal’s immune system to react, for example, cells may release histamine which causes itching.
Food or dietary intolerance – This occurs when something in the food doesn’t agree with the animal’s body but does not trigger the immune system to react. For example, a dog may not be able to digest cow’s milk well.

Food allergies and intolerances can be serious medical conditions, affecting the health and wellbeing of your pet. Keep a close eye on your pet’s appetite, energy level, stool quality and body condition. If you notice any changes, seek professional veterinary advice.

What is hypoallergenic dog food?

Hypoallergenic dog food , is made without ingredients that are known to cause common food intolerances in canines . Dogs tend to be allergic to proteins (meat or dairy), most commonly beef. Some dogs will be allergic to other ingredients, such as wheat, eggs and soya.

Is grain free better for dogs with sensitive stomachs?

There are no studies that have shown grain-inclusive diets to be detrimental to the health of our domestic dogs and it is rare that a dog would require a grain-free diet for medical reasons. In fact, the cooked grains in commercial diets provide an array of beneficial nutrients to the diet including vitamins, minerals, and fibre.

As omnivores, dogs naturally eat meat, grains and plant products. However, as the most common dietary allergens in dogs are beef, dairy and wheat, it follows that if your dog has a sensitive stomach, choosing a food that doesn’t contain any of these ingredients may be helpful.

Dogs need a little bit of fibre in their diet to help maintain a healthy gut. Pea fibre and wholegrain cereals are examples of fibre you may find in standard dog food.
