Small Pet Bedding FAQs
Got a question about paper pet bedding? To help you make the right choice to keep your small pets clean and cosy, we’ve put together some really useful answers from our expert team at Burgess, the pet care experts.
Can I use newspaper for hamster bedding?
While you can use an old newspaper as a cage liner, it’s not ideal as bedding for small pets. If your hamsters, or other small furries rip it up, the newspaper ink can be harmful if they ingest too much of it.
Our specially designed paper bedding for small animals is super absorbent, safe, and an ideal solution to keeping your small pets clean and cosy while they sleep.
Why is paper bedding a better choice than other types of bedding?
The wrong bedding for your hamsters or other small pets can have a negative effect on their health. Wood shavings, sawdust and straw can often contain mites, causing fungal and mange conditions, so these types of animal bedding should be avoided.
Sawdust can also irritate small pets’ skin and lungs. Wood shavings and sawdust not only absorb the natural oils that guinea pigs have which they need to keep their coats and skin in good condition, they also create dust, which causes respiratory problems.
Fluffy or teddy bear stuffing type animal bedding is also not ideal, as this can get wrapped around tiny limbs, causing injuries. Straw is too coarse and could injure delicate eyes.
The best solution for your small furries is choosing cosy and hygienic paper bedding that’s specially designed for small animals. Simply add a 3-5cm layer to your small animals’ bedding and toilet areas.
How often should I change paper bedding ?
You should give your small pets housing a quick clean every day, alongside removing and replacing just the soiled areas of bedding daily, to keep their accommodation hygienic and cosy.
Because Excel Nap & Nest Paper Bedding is light in colour, it’s easy to spot any soiled bedding or litter, remove it and replace with fresh, making cleaning quick and easy.
It also means that you don’t need to replace your small pets’ entire bedding every day. This makes each bag last longer, providing a cost-effective solution for caring for your pets.
What else should I provide in my small pets’ accommodation?
Hamsters, guinea pigs and chinchillas should have a constant fresh supply of good quality feeding hay, placed in hay racks, willow balls or tubes. This should be in areas that are separate to the paper bedding area.
Fresh, nutritious feeding hay is an excellent source of fibre and plays a vital part in digestion and keeps continually growing teeth in good shape. Chomping on hay also does wonders for your small pets’ emotional wellbeing!
Don’t forget to provide fresh, clean water and remember to throw away any uneaten food.
