Though many people think that puppies and dogs are carnivores, they are in fact omnivores, which means they can eat both meat and plant-based foods. A puppy’s developing body needs protein, fats and carbohydrates to help support growing muscles and developing bones and to give them energy. In comparison, older dogs may be less active requiring a lighter diet or support for their joints. Due to the variation in nutritional requirements, we created the Burgess Supadog range which contains specially formulated recipes for dogs in different life stages. Understanding dog digestion

Your dog has several salivary glands located around the jaw and mouth. These glands’ function is to help lubricating the passage of food to the stomach.
The oesophagus is a muscular tube that propels the food, after swallowing, from the mouth into the stomach.
Digestion begins in the stomach, a thick-walled, muscular organ where food can be stored long enough to be mixed with gastric juices. These juices are mucoid, highly acidic, and contain pepsin (a protein-digesting enzyme) and gastrin (a hormone that controls the digestive process via feedback mechanisms).
Our dogs’ stomachs are adapted to accept large quantities of food in any single session. Their stomach can create extra space by relaxing the muscular fibres in its walls and “unfolding” into a large reservoir where the food is churned and mixed before it is passed through the final part of the stomach (the pylorus) into the small intestine. The partially digested food, combined with gastric juices, is called chyme.
Chyme enters the small intestine. This is where further digestion takes place and most of the nutrients are absorbed. The small intestine is comprised of three segments – the duodenum, ileum and jejunum. Each has a slightly different structure and role, but their overall function is to complete digestion so that absorption can occur.

Raw meat vs adult dry dog food. Which is a healthier option?

Unless you’ve been specifically advised by your vet to feed a raw diet, adult dry dog food tends to be a safer choice. At a recent British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) congress, there was universal agreement that homemade raw feeding can be dangerous, simply because it is so difficult to get it right in terms of nutrients and balance. It was also highlighted that handling raw meat products is riskier, so dog owners need to be careful when preparing the food.

Our in-house vet, Dr Suzanne Moyes, advises: “Raw meat must be handled safely as it can carry life-threatening pathogens such as Salmonella, E coli, Campylobacter, Listeria, Clostridium and norovirus. Pets eating infected meat can become ill themselves or shed pathogens into the environment which can pose a risk to any immune-compromised members in a household.”

What’s the difference between a complete dog food and a complementary one?

Complete dog foods are those that will deliver all your dog’s required essential nutrients in their daily portions.
