A dog’s nutritional needs vary throughout their life. It’s been estimated that puppies and kittens grow at roughly 15 times the rate of a human baby and so need a diet that’s high in energy, boosted with extra minerals and vitamins. Puppy stomachs are relatively small and their jaws less powerful, so they need to eat a highly digestible, good quality diet, little and often.

Compared with adult dogs, puppies require a little more protein to support their growing muscles and the right balance of calcium and phosphorus for developing bones and teeth. They also need smaller kibble to make eating and digestion easier.

Over the past few decades, the science of pet nutrition has come a long way. We now know much more about the significant role nutrition plays when it’s tailored to the different stages of our pets’ development, ensuring the optimum quality of life for the longest time possible.

From the age of 6 weeks, gradually introduce your puppy to kibble over a week by mashing a little down with hot water to create a paste and cooling to room temperature. Gradually add less water until your puppy is eating the dry kibbles. Always provide plenty of fresh clean water for them to drink.

Puppies, with their small stomachs, need three or four small meals a day. This can be reduced to two meals a day as they get older and move onto adult food.

If switching to a new food, do this over the course of a few days to a week to avoid upset tummies. Start by replacing a small amount of your puppy’s current food with their new food, and gradually increase the proportion of new food.

Follow the on-pack guidelines to ensure you are feeding the correct amount for the weight of your puppy. Avoid over-feeding by measuring out their daily ration – don’t guess it – and then divide it up throughout the day. Remember to take treats into account. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily food intake or their diet may become nutritionally imbalanced.

Industry body, UK Pet Food, has a useful Dog Size-O-Meter that can help you identify if your dog is very thin, thin, normal, overweight or obese, but as your young dog grows, it’s important to ask your vet to check your dog’s body condition score. As a guide: You should be able to see and feel your dog’s ribs, spine and hip bones.

• Your dog’s waist should be clearly visible when viewed from above.
• Your dog’s belly shouldn’t be sagging underneath, there should only be a small amount of belly fat.
