Dogs require a careful balance of 37 essential nutrients in their food. Working dogs are always on the go and their nutritional requirements vary from those of the average pet dog. Your dog should get everything they need from their food, which is why choosing tailored nutrition that matches your dog’s life stage and lifestyle – such as Burgess Supadog Active if you have a working dog – is important.

With the right food from a reputable supplier, there’s no need to give your dog extra vitamins. In fact, the overdosing of vitamins can be harmful. Unless you are advised by your vet, your dog should not require additional supplements.

When switching to a new food, do this over the course of a few days to a week to avoid upset tummies. Start by replacing a small amount of your dog’s current food with their new food, and gradually increase the proportion of new food.

When feeding a complete dry food, split your dog’s daily portion into two or three servings, given throughout the day, ensuring they have plenty of fresh water too. You’ll find detailed feeding instructions on the back of food packs.

The golden rule is don’t guestimate – measure out accurate portions. Giving your dog a little more than they need means they could become overweight. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily food intake or their diet may become nutritionally imbalanced.

You should be able to see and feel your dog’s ribs, spine and hip bones.

Your dog’s belly shouldn’t be sagging underneath, there should only be a small amount of belly fat.
