Rabbit hay should make up around 85%-90% of your beloved small animal’s diet, which is why we’ve got such a tasty and irresistible collection! Excel tasty nuggets – A small bowl to accompany feeding hay will give your bunny all the nutrients and minerals they need.

Excel nature snacks – Natural snacks can be fed in small amounts to help bonding and encourage foraging.

Fresh greens – Can be fed as a treat to add variety and provide additional nutrition.

Fresh water – Fresh water should always be available! Ensure it’s not frozen in the winter.

Feeding Hay for Rabbits FAQs

Burgess’ in-house vet, Dr Suzanne Moyes MVB MRCVS, answers some frequently asked questions about the best hay for bunnies, how much they should eat and what else to include in their diets.

Suzanne is a small animal vet and joined Burgess in January 2013. Suzanne is in charge of recipe development and production and works with her teams to create a great range of high-quality products.

Most bunnies like to play and throw toys around, so incorporating hay as part of playtime is a great way to get your bunny to enjoy their tasty Timothy hay or Meadow hay. You could stuff a willow ball or a cardboard tube with grass hay, ideal for batting about! Or, try putting a bunch of fresh hay in a sheet of brown paper and tying the ends with a strand of hay to look like a Christmas cracker. Add hay to your rabbit’s favourite areas to encourage all-day grazing.

If you’ve found that your rabbit is refusing to eat their hay, it may be damp or stale. Ensure you’re always buying hay that is fresh and store it correctly in a cool, dry place. Too much of a good thing can also be a problem! If you’re feeding your rabbit up on pellets or vegetables, they simply may not be hungry enough to eat their hay.

Sudden changes in eating habits might be a cause for concern, so please consult with a veterinarian if you’re worried.
