“Love rarely touches the reasoning parts of the brain. It touches the dreamy parts, the devoted parts – it touches the parts we sometimes call the heart. For many thousands of years, it’s there that our dogs have lived,” writes author Jeffrey Kluger in How Dogs Think: Inside the Canine Mind.

And of course, if you’re a devoted cat guardian, your best bud is a bunny, or you’re obsessed with guinea pigs, then you’ll know just how firm a hold on your heart a fluffy, four-legged friend can have.

As it’s the month of love – and we want BFFs (Best Furry Friends) everywhere to be recognised for how much we humans value their affection and companionship – some of the Burgess team reveal what it is about their pets that makes their heart skip a beat...

💘💞💘

“When I first met Odie, it was love at first sight, and I knew he was meant to be with me. During a recent session with our dog trainer, she told me that she knows just how much he loves me because he never takes his eyes off me! Odie is always by my side, following me from room to room. The bond we share is truly special, and I can't remember what life was like before him.”

“My two kittens Bisto and Benson have changed my life. They bring chaos and destruction, but also so much love and lots of cuddles. From being rescued as feral stray kittens, they have really grown into the big personalities they have. I grew up as a dog person, but these two bundles of fluff have firmly lodged their way into my heart. From the zoomies, to demanding dinner as soon as I come in from work, and night-time cuddles, they really have completed our family, and I wouldn’t want it any another way.”

Kealy, Digital Marketing Lead

💘💞💘

“Every morning when I go into my rabbit Bertie’s room, he gets up on his back legs asking for a head rub. When he’s ready, he binkies and zooms to his little chair where he will sit and wait for his morning treat. I love that he is as excited to see me as he is for his treat!”

Lauren, Supply Chain Co-ordinator

💘💞💘

“My guinea pigs Bubble and Squeak have big characters for such little creatures, they are always letting me know when its snack time – which is all the time! They are always there to say hello, family and friends love coming round to give them a cuddle and a treat. They are definitely part of the family!”

Rachel, QA Co-ordinator

💘💞💘

Rupert is my 5-year-old cat. He is friendly, handsome and fluffy in equal measure, and he doesn’t hesitate to snuggle up on other people’s laps! But when it really comes down to it, he’s my best friend and I’m his and we choose each other every time!”

Nicole, Marketing Manager

💘💞💘

Maisy is my 5-year-old family dog. She is always happy to see me no matter what. Any other dog might wag their tail when greeting their owner, but Maisy wags her whole body which always brings me such an overwhelming sense of joy. Maisy has been the light of my life since the day we brought her home. I feel there’s no love quite like ours.”

Alex, Graphic Design Executive

💘💞💘

Nelly is a very independent bunny, which I love! But after she’s done with the zoomies, she loves to hop up to me, nestle her nose and chin into my hand to request attention. Her nose bumps and licks when I get her snacks out are also adorable. For a small little bunny, she certainly knows how to brighten our day!”

Ellie, Marketing Assistant

💘💞💘

“When we get home as a family, it’s the way that my rescue mixed-breed dog Kizzy greets everyone but looks past all the other people, searching for me. She loves us all, but I’m her person and it’s truly a magical feeling to know that I’m her number one human.”

💘💞💘

Houdini, also known as Dudes, was my 24-year-old cat who we had for nearly 21 years before he passed away last year. Formally a stray, we adopted him from a local RSPCA where he had escaped several times earning himself his name. In the years that followed, we grew up together and he continued to be part of our family through various house moves and the arrival of new cats and dogs, Dudes always stuck by us. It was an absolute privilege to have Dudes as a member of our family for so long and he will always be remembered for his loving, friendly, independent personality.”
