Support the first-ever Yorkshire Rescue Dog Takeover and you can!

At Burgess Pet Care, we love all breeds of dog, but there’s one sort of dog that always pulls on our heartstrings – and that’s a rescue dog. That’s why, to celebrate Yorkshire Day 2025, we’re launching the first ever Yorkshire Rescue Dog Takeover Week! Our independent family-run business is on a mission to support independent animal rescue charities across the UK by providing them with special deliveries of free food.

“Sadly, it’s estimated that there are around 100,000 dogs in rescue shelters at any given time in the UK,” says Burgess in-house vet Dr Suzanne Moyes MVB, MRCVS. “Though cared for by amazing people, these confused and heartbroken animals find themselves in unfamiliar environments through no fault of their own, hoping that someone will choose them to become their cherished family pet. While we’d love to take all these unwanted dogs home with us, we know that’s just not possible. But, as a pet food manufacturer, what we can do is help support the rescue charities that care for these abandoned animals by providing them with free food.”

Donations of food frees up funds so charities can focus on other vital aspects of rescue dog care

Dog food is a significant expense for rescue charities, which is why donations of free, nutritious dog food can make a real difference to hard-working rescue organisations. As well as helping to feed the dogs in their care, donations of food means rescue charities have more funds available for other vital aspects of their work such as rehabilitation, vet care, training and rehoming.

We’re making a bigger impact year on year

And, if the impact of our annual Greyhound & Rescue Two-Week Takeover is anything to go by, we know just how much a difference this kind of campaign can have.

“We launched our first Greyhound & Lurcher campaign back in 2019,” explains Dr Moyes, who oversees recipe development and product production at Burgess HQ at Cherry Tree Mill in East Yorkshire. “This annual event highlights the amazing work of rescue charities and raises awareness of rescue hounds needing happy forever homes. In the first year, we were able to make £6,500 worth of Burgess Supadog Greyhound & Lurcher food donations – and this vital campaign has gone from strength to strength. In 2025, an incredible £27,000 worth of much-need food was delivered by members of the Burgess team to Greyhound & Lurcher rescue charities across the UK.”

A chance to support rescue dogs of all breeds

We’re extremely proud of what the Greyhound & Lurcher Two-Week Takeover has achieved over the years and our aim is to have the same impact for rescue dogs of all breeds.

“The seed was sown In 2022, when we launched a new dog food variety – Supadog Rich in Salmon – featuring an on-pack image of Jess, a two-year-old rescued Staffy Cross,” says Burgess Pet Care’s Kate Cuss. “For every bag sold, 20p is donated to dog rescues across the UK in the form of free food.”

For the very first Yorkshire Rescue Dog Takeover, launching on 1 August 2025 – which is Yorkshire Day – Burgess Pet Care has over £3,000 collected from the proceeds of sales of Supadog Rich in Salmon, to donate in the form of free food to independent dog rescue charities.

Kate adds: “We’re hoping as many dog lovers as possible will get behind our new campaign, posting their nominations for rescue charities who make a huge contribution to the welfare and lives of all dogs, ensuring they can be rehomed and live happy, fulfilled lives.”

How you can support the first ever Yorkshire Rescue Dog Takeover Week

  • Stock up on Burgess Supadog Rich in Salmon adult dog food (our 5-star reviewed complete food which contains highly digestible ingredients and includes fish oil and zinc to help your dog’s coat stay shiny and healthy). Remember that for each bag sold, 20p is donated to dog rescues in the form of free food. Every year, the pot will grow to enable us to feed even more dogs in rescue centres!
